Rule Violation: 2020 SGA Elections

Response from Election Board to rule violation April 11

The UMBC SGA Election Board recently received notification of an Instagram post made by the UMBC Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. The post endorsed Mehrshad Devin for President, Zachary Kay for Executive Vice President, Nailah-Bena Chambers for Senate, and Patrick Reid for Senate.

The post was found to violate 2020 UMBC SGA Election Rules on endorsements, and the Election Board has taken action to require that the post be immediately removed. Pi Kappa Phi may not post any endorsement posts with the outlined candidates either until Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at 5:30pm.

In addition, the Election Board has determined that Nailah-Bena Chambers and Patrick Reid, as well as any and all representatives of either campaign, will be prohibited from campaigning in any form for 48 hours. The prohibition applies to all forms of campaigning as outlined in the Election Rules. The two candidates and their representatives may resume campaigning no earlier than 5:30pm ET on Wednesday, April 15, 2020. New endorsements of the candidates will not be published by the Election Board during the prohibition, and no new endorsements may be released from any campaign representative or supporter of the campaign during the prohibition.

The Election Board reminds candidates and their campaign representatives to reference the Election Rules to ensure that their actions are within election guidelines.
