CANDIDATE PROFILE

James McCauley

Candidate for Treasurer

Questions:
1. What experience and qualifications do you have?
2. What is your platform? What do you hope to accomplish if you win?
3. What I really want students to know about me is…. ?

Candidate Responses:
1. In the past three years I have been at UMBC I have been a member of and worked closely with many student organizations. Starting my freshman year, I was executive staff in the SGA where I worked under the Treasurer for 2 years. As of February 9th of this year I have been serving as Vice President of Student Organizations, which has been an excellent opportunity to meet many organization leaders and find out what problems they face regularly. Throughout my entire experience at UMBC I have learned much about what it means to be a leader, but also how important it is to listen to all the different communities on campus; organizations, commuters, residents, the enthusiastic, or the uninterested. It’s everyone’s money.

2. College is a time of study, but it’s also 4 years of opportunity. It is an opportunity to make something, an opportunity to enjoy yourself. I believe this position comes with a responsibility: ensuring that your money is spent in a manner that will benefit the student body the most. This goes beyond talking about SGA, but the entirety of the university. I hope to increase the amount of the SGA budget currently allocated to student organizations while at the same time making sure that money is spent in a responsible manner beneficial to the entire student body. I intend to work closely with all organizations, including those that don’t typically turn to SGA for support. Sports clubs and Greek life fall into this category and would benefit greatly from more support to their fund raising programs and in looking at outside sources for money.

3. At the risk of sounding cliche, I want you to know that I am running for this position ready to listen and willing to offer my dedication. I will always be willing to work with you regardless of obstacles or bureaucracies that stand in the way. We can make it happen.

Brief Platform Statement:

  • Promote and provide an opportunity for campus life to reach its full potential
  • Speaking on behalf of underrepresented parts of the student body
  • Making sure that student fees are used in ways most beneficial to the entire undergraduate population
