CANDIDATE PROFILE

Matthew McNey

Candidate for Senator

Questions:
1. What experience and qualifications do you have?
2. What is your platform? What do you hope to accomplish if you win?
3. What I really want students to know about me is…. ?

Candidate Responses:
1. I served on the Reservoir High School Board in 2005. I also learned important effective networking and organizing skills as a canvasser in three political campaigns. I was appointed, in 2008, a First-Year Ambassador and fulfilled that position in 2009. As a FYA I sat on the First-Year Council, helping implement and coordinate campus activity. I have served on the Legislative Board. As subsidiary of the SGA it has dealt with higher education issues, such as the tuition freeze and textbook reform. I have been a member of the Patapsco CAB, planning Doggapalooza. Currently, as a Student Government Senator I have new aspirations. I sponsored and introduced legislation that was unanimously passed supporting same-sex couples right to health benefits in the 2010 Budget. I have also championed a streamlined SGA, urging the dissolution of the Student Organization Advocates and reining in uncontrolled spending.

2. As Senator I will encourage a fully sustainable campus based on alternative energy. Alternative energy is a cost effective method for waste elimination within the budget. New revenue based on reduced cost, green grants and tax credits, will leave room for extended library hours within the budget. With events like Black and Gold Day and Doggapalooza right around the corner, I will continue my work to increase school spirit, more importantly activity. Once in office, I will strive to stimulate school activity using Senate resources. The transcript fee is a future impediment to all students. I have been an integral part of the effort that opposes the transcript fee. While I am accomplishing these goals, I will continue to hold the SGA accountable to the students, empowering their ideas and concerns.

3. I really believe and commit to the statement, "action for students and by students". I will not leave students ideas, insights or concerns behind. Honesty has always been my best policy. When you want me, I'll try to help.
