CANDIDATE PROFILE

Sunaina Khandelwal

Candidate for Senator

Questions:
1. What experience and qualifications do you have?
2. What is your platform? What do you hope to accomplish if you win?
3. What I really want students to know about me is…. ?

Candidate Responses:
1. I currently serve as a senator in the SGA and was a member of the First Year Council my freshman year. As a senator this year, I have spent most of my time leading the Library Hours Committee. We have been able to ensure the installation of extra outlets as well as seating arrangement in the Atrium. We have gathered data from students to demonstrate the need for longer library hours and have been communicating with administrators about the need. I have also served as the liaison between the Resident Student Association and the SGA to aid achieving common goals more efficiently. With my past year as a Senator, I have been able to develop relationships with administrators as well as peers on campus that share the same vision and goal as most students. I am experienced in my communication skills and know that I have the necessary tools required to undertake and complete any project to success.

2. Firstly, I would like to bring SGA to the students. After working with the Library hours Committee, I have realized the importance and need for communication among the common students and their student leaders. I want to make sure that whichever project I, or other SGA leaders undertake, it is something that a common UMBC student is actually interested in. Secondly, I would like to continue my current work on extending the AOK Library hours or looking for other 24 hour study places. The recent budget cuts have slowed this project down immensely, but i know proper negotiation will lead to success. 3. Thirdly, I would like to work on cutting down other excessive fees on campus like the printing and transcript fee. I ran to ensure a smaller printing fee on campus last year and would like to maintain the same goal next year.

3. I am a dedicated and goal driven individual and truly care about the community around me. I chose to take action than to complain. My experience this past year has taught me a lot about the organization, effective communication and persistence required to make a change. I know that I'm ready to undertake another year as a Senator so I can improve upon my mistakes this past year to have a more successful and productive term this upcoming year. I can promise that I will be continuously making the necessary changes in myself that are required to be successful if elected by you as your Senator. I believe I have acquired the necessary skills this past year and am ready and excited to work on the goals that I have set.

Brief Platform Statement:

  • Bring the Student Government to you. Make that the SGA is working on something that you actually care about.
  • Extend library hours or find alternative 24/7 study places on campus.
  • Reduce excessive fees on campus: printing and transcript.
