CANDIDATE PROFILE

Stavros Halkias

Candidate for Senator

Questions:
1. What experience and qualifications do you have?
2. What is your platform? What do you hope to accomplish if you win?
3. What I really want students to know about me is…. ?

Candidate Responses:
1. Though I've acquired some past leadership experiences, what really qualifies me for this position is that I give a damn about the school and have the time and motivation to do something about it. I truly believe every student at UMBC could serve as a capable SGA senator if they had the time and think that the system has lost touch with the average student. I've never worked within the SGA system and would be a new voice in the student government, one more in tune with the average student at UMBC.

2. One of the glaring inadequacies at UMBC is the school's drug policy. As it stands a student can face draconian sanctions even if he or she has done nothing illegal. Often times the effects can be devastating to students that are the victim of a judicial system which assumes guilt before innocence. As Senator I will work hard to change this injustice and see that the judicial system and drug policy at the school seek to serve and protect students rather than simply punish them.

3. That I care about them more than the school. UMBC is an institution that serves us and I am more than happy to use a position within the Student Government to fight for the students. Whether the dispute is over an outrageous and opportunistic eight dollar transcript fee, 'displaced' students being forced off campus or an unnecessarily strict drug policy I'll always be on the student's side.

Brief Platform Statement:

  • Reform The Drug Policy at UMBC
  • Improve Involvement On Campus
  • Free Hot Dogs For Everyone* *Note: No one will receive hot dogs
