Retriever Activities Center (RAC)

UMBC's Retriever Activities Center is students' primary location to engage in physical fitness. The RAC offers equipment such as ellipticals, treadmills, stationary bicycles which work well to improve our cardiovascular system. The RAC weight room is a great place to build lean muscle and rid yourself of any fat.

If you are looking for personal instruction on how to lose weight or get into better shape the RAC offers Individual Personal Conditioning session with a certified trainer. Another option is to participate their Group Fitness sessions which include yoga, zumba, cardio training and more (see RAC website for event calendar).

For those students who enjoy partaking in sports, the RAC designates certain hours so that students can play basketball, soccer, cricket, tennis and even use the indoor pool. The RAC is also the place to go if you are interested in joining one of UMBC's many sports clubs or intramural teams. Depending on the semester, you can join teams like the soccer, field hockey, rugby, tennis, or volleyball team. Joining a club or intramural teams is an easy way to stay in shape, make some friends, and even build some leadership skills. Sign Up Forms are located throughout the RAC or outside RAC 321.

University Health Services (UHS)

SGA's Health & Wellness Department works closely with UHS to provide students important health information which will make them more knowledgeable and allow them to make more informed health decisions. UHS holds regular Health Education Programs on topics such as nutrition and exercise, stress management, alcohol/drugs and many more; this is a fantastic way to learn new information that can affect your life. If you prefer, students even have the option of requesting one-on-one consultation with the UHS staff on related issues.

University Health Services strongly recommends student to have medical insurance. For those who are uninsured, UHS recently began offering students Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan [link] which provides students with discounted medical and dental insurance. UHS also provide students with several clinical services including immunizations, screenings, acupuncture and more.

University Counseling Services (UCS)

UCS was created for the purpose of helping students get though the stressful periods associated with college life but also to guide students to make the most of their college experience. As the name implies, UCS staff provides counseling to all UMBC students designed to help you make sense of any situation which you may be in. The support and advice that you will receive from counselors will without a doubt lead you in a direction of personal growth.

Counseling Services offers students counseling in a wide range of issues including depression, relationships, substance abuse, anxiety and self-esteem. Students have the choice of receiving counseling individually, with a partner or as part of a group. Entrance into the UCS building and any information shared during counseling is confidential as required by law.

UCS also conducts a series of workshops titled "Skills for Success" twice each semester. The workshops available focus on Procrastination, Anxiety, Stress Management, and Time Management. Here you will learn signs and symptoms of common issues, statistics and obtain valuable advice on how to handle particular situations.

Interfaith Center

UMBC is a university of true diversity. Students come to this school from all different countries and different backgrounds, which is why the Office of Student Life developed the Interfaith Center. The Interfaith Center was designed students, faculty and staff the opportunity to practice their individual and collective faiths.

Dining Facilities

Students at UMBC have the liberty of choosing from several places to eat on campus. Depending on what you're in the mood for, you may choose go to True Grits Dining Hall which offers student a wide selection of meals. You may also visit the Commons area where you can find restaurants such as Famous Famiglia Pizzeria, Au Bon Pain, or Mondo Subs. Other options including stopping by the Administration Building for breakfast or lunch or eating at Chick Fil-A or Starbucks located in the University Center. Lastly, you have Outtakes- the convenience store located at True Grits and The Commons.

UMBC Dining Services has supported alternative diets by making sure restaurants and dining facilities have enough vegan and vegetarian meals available to students. Mondo Subs, Famous Famiglia Pizzeria, Au Bon Pain, Salsarita's Fresh Cantina, Mesquite Ranch BBQ & Grill, Jow Jing, Fresh Fusions, Chick Fil-A and Starbucks each offer students at least one meal satisfying vegan or vegetarian needs. True Grits offers some meals which are labeled "Vegan" and provide all students with a salad bar featuring legumes, beans, peas all of which are a great source of protein.

The dining services website features meal plan information, hours of each dining services-operated location, daily menus, and nutrition information for food served on campus. There is even a Nutrition Journal tool which allows faculty, staff, and students to encourage them to monitor what they eat and make healthy food choices.

Commons Gameroom

Located on the 2nd Floor of The Commons, just past the entrance to the Student Organizations area, The Commons Gameroom is a wonderful place to take a break and relax with some friends or by yourself if you have some time to spare between classes or a job.

The Gameroom features eight professional-grade billiards tables and two table-tennis courts that can be used for as little as $4.00 per hour. We also offer ½ price play on Saturdays and Free-Play all day on Sundays. Additionally, we offer four video gaming consoles that support X-Box 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii, with controllers you can rent from us for FREE if you don’t already possess your own. We also offer the classic arcade-style basketball shootout where you can test your skills against a friend or try for your own personal best score. Finally, we offer a broad range of board games that you can borrow free of charge at our service desk.
