Josh Michael is a Sophomore at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and is a member of the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program. Josh is planning to major in Political Science with a focus in Educational Policy. In addition, he hopes to receive a Secondary Education certification in social studies.
Josh is very excited to work with the SGA in his second year. He has previously served as the Assistant Director of Community and Governmental Affairs (2005-2006). Working with Assistant Director Anna Sierra, Josh hopes to strengthen community relations around UMBC and embolden SGA's lobbying efforts in Annapolis.
Josh serves as the Student Commissioner of the Maryland Higher Education System (MHEC) for the 2007-2008 academic year. Additionally, he was elected the Vice Chair of the University System of Maryland Student Council (USMSC). He will continue to serve in his role as one of UMBC's two representatives to the USMSC (2006-2008).
As a member of the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program, Josh volunteered at West Baltimore Middle School this past year. He plans to continue his volunteer efforts with youth in the Baltimore City community. Upon graduation in 2010, Josh hopes to teach middle school in Baltimore City. He will further pursue a master's degree in school administration and supervision, and eventually, a doctorate in education.
Josh is also involved in a variety of activities outside of being a UMBC student. Involvement includes serving as the Policy Coordinator for the Community Advisory Council to the Howard County Board of Education (2006-present); volunteer for a youth leadership program called Maryland Leadership Workshops (2004-present; Student Policy Board Member 2004-2006); Co-Chair of Committee to Obtain Voting Rights for the Student Member of the Howard County Board of Education (2005-2007); member of the Maryland State School Superintendent's Family Involvement Council (2006-present); coach for Hero's Lacrosse in Howard County (2005-present); Announcer for Centennial High School Football games (2004-present); and Substitute Teacher for the Howard County Public School System (2007-present).
While a student at Centennial High School, Josh served on the SGA for three years, two years at the student body President. During his senior year, he was appointed by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich to serve as the Student Member of the Maryland State Board of Education. Josh is a member of the Maryland State Superintendent's Family Involvement Council.
In his home community of Ellicott City in Howard County, Josh is an active member of the community. He is a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Howard County Board of Education. He announces home games for the Centennial High School football team. Further, Josh volunteers as a lacrosse coach for middle school boys during his free time.
