A senior Computer Science major from Salem, Massachusetts, Jay Lagorio has dabbled in a little bit of everything to keep life interesting. Having attended public and private schools and for a short period being home schooled, he’s seen many of the opportunities education has to offer and wants to make sure UMBC students have the best choices presented to them.

Jay served two terms as the Student Government Association's Director of Communications before being elected President. He managed technology and its role in helping the SGA become a more effective body for students, include creating and publicizing Internet resources beneficial to students, such as ourUMBC and Textbook Capitalism, in addition to ensuring that groups within the SGA have adequate access to the tools they need to do their jobs. One of his goals was to allow student organizations to file paperwork with the SGA online in a safe, secure manner. That project developed into the SGA Frogger program. In addition to his SGA duties, he was the webmaster and is a Bass II singer in the UMBC Mama’s Boys All-Male Acapella group on campus and has been working with other SGA groups in minor roles when time allows. He was also the webmaster for the First Year Council, a group dedicated to shaping the first year experience for new students at UMBC.

During high school, Jay was the president of his Student Council for two years, Student Representative to the School Committee for two years, a volunteer during the Freshman Orientation program for three years, and the chief architect for the introduction of Project 540, a program designed to integrate civic engagement into the curriculum by showing students that they have a voice in their school system and their community. To relieve stress in his spare time, he played leading stage roles in the Pirates of Penzance, Oklahoma!, Once Upon a Mattress, Footloose! , and The Sound of Music, in addition to being part of the first Festival Drama team to bring Salem High School to the semi-final round of the state competition with a stage production of The Brimstone Journals.

Computers have been a calling for Jay since a very young age, having taught himself programming at the age of eight. His most notable personal project, WordCommands, is supplemented with a library for Facebook Developers, allowing rapid development and deployment of applications based on the Facebook Platform. His previous employers include the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group, a conglomeration of car dealerships based in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, JBM Systems, and others. He has also been a volunteer for the The North Shore Computer Society since the fifth grade, helping teach the elderly how to use their computers more effectively, managing the computer repair clinics, and fixing donated computers for subsequent donation to other charities.

An ambition of his since he was young, Jay intends to live and work in the DC area after finishing school with a degree in Computer Science.
