Post Meeting Discussion: SGA’s Summer Retreat
David: discussion between OSL and Steve about time of SGA’s summer retreat. Wanted to talk about it and if an alternative time would work. The idea of moving it for SGA members who are Woolies or RAs. If they go to retreat they cant be here for Woolie /RA training. Move it to sometime during the summer, not the weekend before school starts. University is making decisions; new SGA would identify priorities sooner. If you had a retreat that wasn’t right before welcome week and not give the opportunity to move in early would you attend? Heard from the senate.
Catherine: Depending on when it was during the summer it might be difficult. For example, I’m from Connecticut and wouldn’t be able to come in the middle of the summer.
Christine: really good idea. I felt that I lost a lot by missing the retreat. It’s really important.
Silva: Could we do it 2 weeks before school started? Middle of the summer people might be busy.
David: two weeks before school starts, you would attend?

Christine: Would have to let people know way in advance.
James: If that does happen if SGA members who are RAs could still move in at the same time freshman do for welcome week. Some of these things need SGA representation.
Yasmin might be the 15th
David: would hope that people would be able to do something over summer without having a retreat
Catherine: would dorms be open two weeks in advance?
No
David: Aug 15 target date.
James: During summer classes?
Yasmin: a lot of the big summer classes, have Saturday classes.
Silva: there is no way that everyone will go.
Harsh: I don’t think we should change the date.
Silva: that’s not really fair.
David: I feel it makes sense to move the retreat to period before it is now, unless it conflicts with summer classes. Will probably be stuck back where we are.
James: what about moving RA training?
David: Maybe the woolies. I can ask. It makes since to train them right before welcome week. Don’t want to train them too far away. The RAs have to go through the training.

Confirmation of Kati Henry for Election Board Chair

This is my second semester at UMBC, poli sci and public admin
Election board chair. I’m passionate about letting students know what SGA does. You all do have a lot of power on campus to create change. Think more students need to know about this. That is my personal reason for being interested in that.
Questions:
Yasmin: how do you plan to stay in control for conflicts?
Kati: I think it’s an advantage that I'm not in SGA. Everyone is on a level playing felid for me. In the end it’s the students' votes that matter, not who I think should win.
David: election board chair is an important position in SGA. One of the few positions where doing your job badly can stagger SGA for years. Election where no one hears about it, or something wrong with the ballot. Want to encourage you to ask all questions now.
Harsh: how do you plan to advertise the election itself
Kati: I think advertising to get candidates is important. The more people who have friends who are running, the more people will vote. We want students to care about the election. Election board would have some events too.
Silva: What have you done that makes you qualified for this position?
Kati: Right now I'm service peer in office of student life. I’m in charge of coordinating things and hooking students up with events on campus. I’ve been good at managing time this semester.
Christine: students don feel like voting. How do you answer students who don’t want to vote?
Think it’s important that the SGA gets student fees and allocates money. You are thinking about how money is being spent. Its important to tell students that. The more students that vote the more credibility SGA has.
Discussion:
Christine: I'm excited to see what she can do.
Silva: she seems very qualified
Christine: when was the lat time we had a female?
David: 3 years ago.
Yasmin: didn’t see any red flags during the interview.
David: senate confirmed her last night.
Yasmin: how neutral is her position?
David: Has to be completely neutral. She can’t pick sides.
Yasmin: should we not be telling her how should she be advertising? I trust her to make the best decision.
David: Reasonable to inform her and ask her to think about things like advertising.
Decision: Members for: 5, Opposed: 0, Abstaining: 0, Absent: 0
