All Present

Everyone approves minutes from last week.

Assignments:
Ozell- GES
Ashley- Go Club
Igor- UMBC Men’s rugby

1. GES- (not attending)
Only have $30 in carryover.David(given $510 last year, 315 spent)
Unsure whether club is an undergrad organization.
David- undergrad organization
Total counts:

Ozell- organized (full points), Are they going to turn away students that are not programming, etc? Are they open to all students?
Total: 84

On amount requested:
Approximately $4 per person given by GES. Seems reasonable.

Voting for full amount: (200 for food, 15 for plasticware) $215 total
For- 5
Opposed- 0
Passes

Why do they want money for cash prizes? SGA cannot fund that.
(Ozell: What if organization wants gift certificates? Also considered cash prizes.)
David: They were asking for SGA to pay student membership for AGA of $150.
They were previvously denied as they were asking for too much at one time. Had to prioritize.
5:48pm waiting for Go Club.
David: SGA money should not be used for cash prizes.
Ozell: money can be allocated for prizes but not cash prizes. Unfair if organizations gives out cash which ends up in hands of own members. But if its gift certificates its fine.

GO Club arrived: 5:51pm
What will money be spent on in tournament?
Answer:
50 people coming, about 12-15 ppl from UMBC, Approximately 800 dollars required.
About 650 dollars towards prizes. Some money to carryover account for travel expenses to tournaments.
Food money will be spent on: about 5 dozen bagels, 20 pizzas,
Joy: When you asked for money previously for tournaments you spent it well, but what did you spend carryover money for?
Bought books about Go, money on tshirts to be sold to club members and outsiders, some money came back from there, some money used for tournaments not SGA funded.

“ “-Do you ever have fundraisers?
We have two tournaments each year, where we sell tshirts. Written to the American Go Foundation for money, they won a membership drive where they made money but cannot win that each year as it is unreliable.

“ “- You can have bake sales, etc?
Don’t have anyone to bake.

David- Club registers UMBC members and uses their fee money (for AGA)?
Ans- yes

“ “- 5 dollars for UMBC students(for tournament)?
Ans- yes

“ “- 20 dollars for anyone else(for tournament).
Ans- yes

Joy- Are these the usual charges?
Yes

“ “- how important are prizes and why?
Ans- Ppl would not come and pay if there were no prizes.

Ashley- Don’t you think you should get ppl to come to play go rather than to bribe ppl?
Most ppl come to have fun and play go, only strong players have chance of winning, separate sections for ppl of lower skill. Most ppl do not come for the prizes.

Go Club- We meet 2 days a week, and go of campus to play Go twice a week as well.

Igor- Prizes dependent on how many ppl show up, so if you don’t have 35 non UMBC students how does that affect the prizes?
Ans- probably do a percentage after entry fees come in.

David- We’ve had problems with SGA money going toward prizes.
GO Club- We aren’t using SGA money for prizes, only for food.

6:01pm- Totalling for Go Club.

Totals- 65

Joy: How do you feel about the different requests?

“ “- Seems its catering to off campus ppl

Ashley- If it benefited UMBC students more then it might be ok, but it doesn’t seem to be doing that.

Joy- If you look at it from the pov that it’s a fundraiser, it makes it better.

Ashley- They should try to do more of their own fundraising.

Rugby club arrived- 6:08pm

Come back to GO club

Joy- Tell us about Rugby World Cup

Club- Co sponsored by Commons, will show a feature game every day in the commons, multiple featured games with activities, events, all UMBC students can access world cup on channel 4.
A lot of advertising on USA games, all blacks games, Rugby is the number 2 sport in terms of viewers, Rugby very popular on campus, want to link a world event to a local event on campus- the rugby club, will do events that promote the world cup and will do local events such as live games on campus to increase knowledge about rugby.

Joy- explain Setanta tv.
Worldwide sports channel, shows rugby, cricket, etc, bought rights for rugby worldcup, all on France time, so games will be on when everyone has break from class. Also bought Premiership rights. Rugby channel cost was 200, commons paid have, we request 100 for our half. OIT bought the channel, which has control over satellite and cables, and so can broadcast it on channel 4. want to advertise channel 4. Put up rugby schedules, give them to RA’s and CD’s.

“ “- What does food include?
Part by the commons. Pregame event, linked to live game here, free burgers, dogs, wings then a live game so ppl can see it live and understand, as it is initially a complicated sport.

Joy- is there going to be just one pregame and live events throughout month?
Yes one pregame and then many events throughout campus. Money will be spread out,

“ “- How many ppl will benefit from this
Everyone on campus as they hav a tv. Live estimate- 500 ppl,
To touch student body as a whole- approximately 6000, all residential students.

Ashley- Where will the events take place.
Commons agreed to pay audio visual, sound etc, all Rugby club has to do is advertise,

Joy- When will pregame event be?
All depends on what happens here. Expect 2-300 ppl at rugby pitch pregame.

Ahsley-have you spoken to res life about fliers in dorms
Yes, casually not officially, seems to be no problem, cant free post but must speak to RA’s and CD’s.

Ashley- Do you think this event will benefit UMBC rugby team and increase viewers for team.
Yes

Joy- What will you do if you don’t get this money?
We’ll work with what we have. We had enough for Setanta sports, but that’s all we have. All social events, etc through personal funding, money tight, have to fundraise 20% over athletics dept budget.

Joy – Whats the most imp out of ur requests?
Setanta tv first,
Advertising- second to spread the news.
Food- third,

Joy- For advertising, do you have a more detailed breakdown of how you will advertise.
We’ll have large fliers made of Setanta sports schedule, Games will be daily, feature games over weekends, Fliers as simple as “rugby world cup brought to you by Commons and Rugby club”.
Can go ahead after we get the funding.

Final statement- world cup is a big deal around the world, the US is doing the best it ever has, Club is doing well.

David- 5400 in account, most goes towards equipment, not much SGA carryover.

“ “, Christine- excellent theyre trying to get whole campus involved, especially for the small amount theyre requesting.

Score for Rugby- 94

Back to Go Club(6:26pm)
Ashley: Seems they onl want ppl to go for prizes,
“ “: Consider scope, not to give out prizes, want to play.
Why use undergrad money for something catering to off campus ppl.
Ozell: Hardly any scope at UMBC outside Go club
Igor: opportunity to expand, but no advertising, not bothering to advertise to UMBC

David: Already given them $2895 this year.
“ “: Seems the prices theyre charging, they can make their money back.
Joy: But its their fundraiser.
“ “: SGA only gives $50 for fundraisers, theyre asking for way more than that.

Joy: Give them some money, or no money?
Ashley: If theyre charging entrance fee, they don’t need more money other than food.

“ “- membership fee most important as theyre only trying to lower costs for membership.

Cut down money for whats?
“ “- keep membership fee as it will benefit UMBC students.

Ozell: Cut out food,
David: already given them 2900 dollars,
Joy: cut out setup fee as well?
Joy: Only vote on membership fee, cut other requests.

Voting on $150 for membership fee( other requests cut)
For: 3
Opposed: 0
Abstaining: 1

“ “ – Decide on standards for the year
6:37pm meeting adjourned.
