House of Organizations Meeting, 5/2/2007

The following are meeting minutes from the House of Organizations meeting. The House meets every Tuesday at 5:30 PM in Room 318 on the third floor of The Commons. These meetings are open to all students to listen to discussion. If you would like to present an issue, please contact the Speaker of the House, Nayana Davis, in advance so you can be added to the agenda.

W. HL154-0607 – Additional allocation for Perfected Praise Liturgical Dance Ministry’s praise Garments
Mike: didn’t they ask for it before?
Nayana: yeah we didn’t give them. These are praise garments for the new members.
Mike: what is a praise garment?
Christine: it is like a shirt and pants.

X. HL155-0607 –Additional Allocation for Yoga and Meditation Society
Rep: basically it is have a food distribution of vegetarian food distribution. Next semester. The main thing we are trying to achieve is that good food can be obtained with out the harm of animals. We also want to have guest speakers, the cost of the speakers is the travel cost.

James: I have to disagree with ross about the book because they are handing out promotional material.
Carrie: books are great but expensive. They could get hundreds of fliers.

Mike: I think it is more effective to get people to join the organization.

Nayana: a few sga members went to talk with Patty. The facebook group,

Ross: I haven’t been informed since the last meeting.
Nayana: basically what we did was we did divide between

Nayana: the reason we are gathering all this is we will give it to the Patty who will give it to the TRW advisor
James: they frequently say they don’t get enough money and staff.
Ross: you know we have been having these discussions for a long time. A chartered organization is different from the newspaper by students. Am I say I want to write up legislation to get them uncharted then yes but it

James: I think I have a little trouble about the good and bad articles, but the facts being wrong is easy
Mike: the good and bad articles is to get a balance.
James: something I think is good to do is, contact other campus and see what they do.
Ross: my thing as a charter organization, they never want to change the music they play. And we come in and tell them what to do. they would be no, but they would accommodate with the SGA.
Nayana: they choose what to do and what articles they cover.
Mike: there are a lot of events
Ross: if you read the facebook comments they say nothing goes on in UMBC but stuff does happen.

Nayana: there was something else that was that they never get their fact right.
Carrie: they don’t seem like they don’t seem to have any standards
James: the “we don’t have enough writers” because the articles
Mike: they would be better off
Carries: Boston College has three newspapers and they are not that long

David: they probably sell there ads
James: we cut off seven thousand dollars in seven minutes.
Carries: they get more money in the salary then the SGA and SEB.
Nayana: I think the salaries are under our budgets

David: there are big things that could be do__.if we want a better newspaper, then the solution is either getting a new newspaper
Nayana: we are putting the ball in their court
Carrie: david is right, we should start another newspaper. Watching how the another newspaper.
Nayana: I was talking to Tabassum about compiling the weekly reports
Carries: things like who knows about, who knows better about stuff then the SGA, there is a lot of things that we could do to put that info out there.

David: first of all the changes in the student life committee, like the five member rule and enforcing it. So I took a shot at rewriting the SGA policy shared it with other and just to see the mistakes and I want to send that out to you. So you can approve it.
