Executive Departments

The executive branch of UMBC’s SGA is comprised of several departments with different focuses. This year’s departments are below along with a description and meeting times.  All meeting are in the SGA Office, Commons 2B20.

Academic Affairs

This department will work with students to foster a better academic culture. They will engage in conversations with student organization leaders about academic policy. Members may have the opportunity to serve on university committees related to academic policy.

Communications

This department is responsible for relaying all information going on within SGA to the campus community,  and managing the social media accounts. It will also be responsible for managing external PR and Internal Communication.  They will work with Senate and Finance Board to continue live tweeting/streaming meetings.

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs

This department provides guidance to the diversity & multicultural student organizations at UMBC. D&M Affairs assists organization in team-building and obtaining resources, such as co-sponsorships. This department will host a few open forums, and assist in diversity-related marketing and communications. They will also help in the planning of a new diversity intensive retreat that SGA will host this year!

Environmental Affairs

This department will promote sustainability and environmental awareness on campus. In the past, it was responsible for working with dining services to get composting in the Commons, collaborating with environmental organizations with events such as Earth Day, and for implementing the Bike Share Program.

Health and Wellness

Health and Wellness will encompass all areas of the subject of health and wellness (mental, physical, spiritual), with an emphasis on mental health. This department will help raise awareness on campus and foster collaborations with other related organizations.

Institutional Affairs and Student Advocacy

This department will be responsible for two different areas. Institutional affairs will be devoted to any concerns students have which involve UMBC as an institution and/or within the community, and Student Advocacy will provide judicial support and advice for students facing charges with Student Judicial Services or Residential Life.

Leadership Development

This department works on the First Year Ambassador Program, helping make sure that new members of the SGA have the information necessary to pursue initiatives successfully. It is responsible for keeping lines of communication open within the SGA, and giving all Departments the training and resources necessary to sustain effective Departmental Skills.

Service & Community Outreach

This department focuses on issues relating to service and civic engagement on UMBC’s campus. They will have opportunities to collaborate with other service related student organizations and help with outreach for institutional service programs.
